Croatia for Isabelle's Birthday

Isabelle thought a day at the beach would be just the right way to spend her birthday. We considered a beach in Italy. All the best were about an hour and a half away.  So we decided, why not for the same travel, go across Slovenia and into Croatia?  They advertise their beaches all the time on Dutch TV. Plus you get to add a new country to your places visited!

In fact, you get to add a new passport stamp!  Most of our travel is within EU countries and during Isabelle and Spencer's first 20 or so days in Europe, they were never asked to show their passports at border crossings. So it came as a surprise to them when we got to Croatia, which is not a member of the EU, that they needed their passports. Not a problem, just a nice drive back along the beautiful, but thankfully short, Slovenia coast back to the hotel.

Of course when we arrived there was a glass of wine ready.

The beaches in the northern part of Croatia were more like state parks in the U.S. Once again there is a lack of sand. We ended up on the beach you see here. We placed our towels on the grassy area. At the water's edge it was very rocky and a bit slippery. The water was perfectly clear, a little cooler than I like it, but just wonderful. I thought this was one of the best beaches I have been to.

There were plenty of spots not too close to your neighbor.

This was the town we came to first. There was a brick beach in town, but we wanted something a little more traditional. They did have some nice cafes along the water and we were able to get some good deals on beach towels for all and sunglasses for Spencer.

Isabelle's birthday celebration back at the hotel in Trieste. We decided on the standard fare - champagne and chocolate cake.

Guess who's birthday we are celebrating?
